Beth Burney
Mrs. Burney, her husband, Bruce, and their Welsh Corgi, Dewey, relocated to Brevard from Atlanta in 2016. In Atlanta, Mrs. Burney taught 5th grade for 15 years and gifted education for 12 years at Morningside Elementary School. She earned her BA in Elementary Education at Furman University and her M.Ed. in Educational Supervision at Emory University. She completed her Ed.S. degree in 2012 through a cohort with Piedmont College, with an emphasis in underachieving gifted students. The Burneys have two adult sons: one is a restaurant manager in Atlanta and the other, a woodworker, lives and works in the area.
Mrs. Burney's parents purchased a cabin in Penrose when she was a child, so she grew up vacationing in this area. She remembers Sliding Rock when there was only a rope - no platforms or stairs! They still own the cabin, and her boys grew up coming here as well. When the Burneys relocated permanently to Brevard in 2016, the BA board was looking to start an AIG program at BA and hired her to undertake this task. Under her leadership the program has grown to provide services to approximately 23% of BA students, seeking to meet their unique educational needs. In her spare time Mrs. Burney enjoys reading, writing, singing in the Connestee Chorale, crocheting, walking, and traveling.
