Information Page

We partner with Blue Ridge Health to provide comprehensive school-based health services.

  • A School-Based Health Center (SBHC) is a clinic that provides affordable, quality medical care during the school day. The SBHC is available to all Brevard Academy students, their families, faculty and staff.

  • Yes, you can still use SBHC for nurse and urgent care-type visits and still see your regular doctor. We understand that you might already have a PCP or pediatrician. We are happy to offer nursing and urgent care visits to families wanting this type of care while at school. A summary of information from the visit is shared with your PCP/Pediatrician within 24 hours of the documented SBHC visit.

  • The SBHC at Brevard Academy offers nurse visits, primary and urgent care appointments:

    Nurse Visits

✓ Support and care for acute problems such as stomach aches, headaches, nose bleeds, colds and scraped knees

✓ Nursing assessments and administration of over the counter medication (with consent of a parent/guardian)

    ✓ Health and safety education

    Urgent Care

✓ Testing and treating illness such as flu, COVID, cough, cold, strep, urinary tract infections, pinkeye, rashes, mild burns and ear infections

✓ Evaluating suspected injuries: broken bones, strains and sprains

✓ Prescription medications, such as antibiotics

    Primary Care

✓ Annual physical, well-child visits, and sports

    physicals

✓ Management of chronic conditions such as asthma, hypertension, diabetes, etc.

✓ Evaluation and treatment of behavioral health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and ADHD

✓ Medication management and referrals as needed

  • Parent/guardian consent is always required for any student to be treated at the SBHC. This includes giving permission for over the counter medications, vaccinations, and point of care testing such as strep, COVID, and flu.

  • Nursing visits to assess your child’s health concerns are provided free of charge. Primary and urgent care visits are billed through Medicaid or your private health insurance. We offer a sliding fee schedule to lower-income families without insurance coverage. Billable visits require consent from a parent/guardian.

  • The SBHC will be open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 8:00a-4:00p, on days that school is in session. Summer hours may be available, based on need.

  • Students (and families) are eligible for all SBHC services with a parent or guardian’s written permission.

    Registration information includes:

    • a school based-health registration form that includes some medical history information

    • a patient consent for treatment form

    • health insurance or slide fee scale information.

The SBHC forms are required every 12 months and must be signed by a parent or guardian. You can access the student registration form here.

  • The SBHC currently provides all documents in English, Spanish, Russian and Ukrainian. For other languages, the SBHC will work with translators to compete needed documents in the family’s preferred language. Blue Ridge Health certified interpreting staff will also be available during appointments via video remote interpretation (VRI) technology, to provide language support for Spanish-speaking families. Other languages are also available through an outside vendor to provide video remote interpretations to families upon request.

  • Having a SBHC in schools makes getting health care easier. We want to support our students and families to prevent health problems and treat them early so students can stay in school.

    Schools with health clinics have:

    • Fewer student late arrivals and absences

    • Decrease in discipline problems and suspensions

    • Lower school dropout rates
